Abstract:

In the strip rolling process, chamfer on backup rolls is often used for flatness control, while researches in this area are rarely reported. The effects of the chamfer of backup rolls on flatness of rolled strip control in the rolling of copper strip with 400 mm width were investigated via simple beam model and FEM model. The analysis result of simple beam model shows that the shorter the surface length of backup rolls after chamfer is, the better it is for the flatness control. The result of FEM model analysis shows that when the surface length of backup rolls after chamfer is less than 460 mm, the stress concentration will arise at the ribs of rolling plate, which easily leads to rib waves defect. So the advantage of chamfer on backup rolls on strip control and the stress concentration occurred at rolling rib owing to the undersized surface length of backup rolls after chamfer must be considered together when surface length of backup rolls after chamfer being set to seek the optimum value.
