Finite element software Deform-3D was used to simulate the upsetting, drawing and upsetting drawing of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. And strain distribution in the deformed billets was obtained. The results of simulation and tests show that at the same forging reduction, the value of effective strain in the upsetting billet is in the range of 0.41.68. And the organization in the large deformation are prolonged grains with fewer recrystallized new grains in the center, different degree of deformation grains are observed in the other locations; the value of effective strain in the drawing billet is in the range of 0.741.96. Microstructure subjected to large deformation, and more prolonged grains with re-crystallized new grains are presented. It also has taller effective strain than upsetting. At the same overall forging reduction, when the forging reduction of drawing is bigger than that of upsetting, the higher value of strain, uniform and smaller microstructure can be obtained.
The results have a certain guiding significance for production practice.
