A method to improve material utilization ratio of automobile sheet metal parts was elaborated considering many kinds of automobile types, and the workflow chart was given. The CAE simulation technology of sheet metal forming was adopted during the design process. The optimized part condition and reasonable craft plan were gained by optimization of part boundary, addendum surface, blank shape executed by interactive trial and error. Consequently, the maximum optimization of material utilization ratio was realized. For the wheel house outer of B car, the material utilization ratio was improved from 38.04% to 56.67%, material was reduced up to 3.61 kg per car, and cost is saved 22.96 yuan per car. Therefore, it is concluded that the method is effective and feasible.
