Abstract:

 The mechanism and cause of folding defect at the inner turning corner R of an 90° elbow joint for aluminum alloy were analyzed by a combination of fracture analysis, process analysis, investigation analysis, finite element simulation and experimental verification, and the effective measures to prevent the above-mentioned folding defect were put forward. The results show that the fundamental cause of the folding defect is the unreasonable flow of metal in the plastic deformation process, and the direct causes of the above-mentioned folding defect are the direct die forging of bar, small fillet radius of die transition, insufficient smoothness of die cavity and lax control of surface defect cleaning etc. In addition, the possibility of the folding defect at the inner turning corner R of 90° elbow joint is greatly reduced by adopting process optimization measures of adding the pre-forging process, trimming die and strengthening the control of surface defect cleaning, which are also effective measures to prevent the folding defect at the inner turning corner R of elbow joint.
