Abstract:

 In order to investigate the influences of different sinking processes on the forming quality, mechanical properties and failure mechanism of self-pierce riveted joints, two sinker features and three sinker thicknesses were designed for 6063-T6 aluminum alloy sheet with the thickness of 3.0 mm. Then, aluminum alloy was used as the upper plate to complete the connection with the DP590 high-strength steel sheet with the thickness of 1.2 mm, and cross-section inspection, mechanical testing and microscopic analysis were conducted. The results show that the joints with three different sinking thicknesses all meet the requirement of undercut value and bottom thickness greater than 0.1 mm when the steel sheet is set as the lower layer. The U-type joint enhances the stiffness of the aluminum sheet, resulting in less deformation compared to the P-type joint under the same loading. In shear-tensile tests, six joints all exhibit interlock failure. As the upper sheet thickness increases, the inclination of the failed rivets gradually decreases. Under the same sinking thickness, the peak load and energy absorption of the U-type joint are at least 1.4% and 6.2% higher than those of the P-type joint, respectively. With the increasing of sinking thickness, the increase in peak load and energy absorption for the U-type and P-type joints exceeds 22.4% and 47.4%, respectively.
